Let’s Talk About Spring Baby…
WRITTEN BY MISTY VANDERWEELE
This spring has us all reminded we live in Alaska. I remember springs just like this about 20 years ago when I was a young bride wanting to grow flowers in my yard. I had planted them out to early and almost lost them all. Don’t worry I haven’t don’t that with our 4500 flower babies but I sure am getting tired of having to cover them in our pop up green houses with a heater running all night. -Definitely not the glamorous side of flower farming.
Over the mother’s day weekend we were vendors at the Alaska Chicks Vintage Home Market where we brought in 300 stems from Alaska Stems in Homer. They were unbelievably GORGEOUS!
-Customer after customer inhaled them and they all sold out by Sunday Morning.
Sweet peas all made in the ground as of yesterday in our home gardens, this includes our sweet pea tunnel. We will also be planting another 300 over in our field production area as well.
Dahlias will be next, we started them in stages. The ones we started in the beginning of March are almost a foot or so tall.
Then on May, 26 across the street in our field production area cut flowers go in the ground. They still need some growth but I think we will be fine although it still seems pretty chilly.
And as for our Flower Farm Tours. Well they are both SOLD OUT! We do have a cancellation list if you are interested. Just pop us an email at aduflowerfarm@gmail.com.
Coming up in June.
Keeping all the flowers watered and taken care of
Final construction of our flower cooler, new this season!
And believe it or not our first blooms, EEEEPPPP
And lastly I’d like to take a moment to congratulate my daughter on her high school graduation.
We are incredibly proud our “little” girl. She has weathered grieving her brother since 13 years old like a champ. She has over come learning challenges, made good choices for herself through all the growing pains/mistakes high school can bring.
She’ll be attending UAA Mat-Su College in the fall where she also won a year college of tuition by entering her art works to the Mat-Su College Art Portfolio Competition.
