Growing Beautiful Blooms in Alaska
I started with Dahlias, a row of sweetpeas, and some sunflowers, each one in remembrance of someone I love. At the time they were the only varieties I was going to farm. I thought how special to have a symbolic but simple business model.
Well we all know how that worked out for me.
I ended up diving deep into packing my brian as full as I could with all things flowers. Continuing my education by touring other farms, attending workshops and conferences. I hungered to try my hand at more. Oh boy, all that new beauty took my breath away.
Hands on teaching by far is my preferred method of learning. So last year I flipped the switch and offered my 1st on-farm curriculum. We walked around exploring my extraordinary back yard, our gardens and field production. I taught about seed sourcing, pre & post harvesting techniques, field prep and so much more. We got our hands dirty making some mason jar arrangments and a quick run down on market bouquets.
Teaching has given me another outlet to share what we do behind the scences as well as share our heart touching story. The tempo of the day is much more relaxed with pleanty of time to take it all in and bask in the scenic glory of our landscape.
In case you are wondering, we are rolling out another school for growing season 2021. Planning is underway as I write.
We’re offering another full jam packed experince again with all you need to know about running a successful farm and all the top “pro” tips on the varieties of blooms here. I pack 8 years of knowledge into 8 grand hours of floral immersion. Best of all we end the day with a, “Garden Party” dinner. The final flourish, the icing on the cake.
Further, we show you ways to overcome complications of the north. Farming in Alaska has the same problematic issue as other states. Weather, bugs, etc but one major challenge we face is we only have 90 to 120 day growing season. There are specific actions you can take to counter act this concern.
